Travel Day
We woke up and unanimously decided to head back to Kolcatta ASAP due to our conditions health wise and the lack of any foreseeable improvement in the weather.
We packed and checked out and managed to get a jeep at 12 in the afternoon heading back to the town of Siliguri, 5-6 hours away. He said that he was going straight to NJP train station which was even better for us as we may be able to get night train tickets to Calcutta from there.
We got on the jeep and were joined buy 4 armed soldiers he was also taking to the train. One thing about this part of India is the amount of army everywhere; every other person is in uniform. I think India and China, next door, have a twitchy relationship about Sikkim.
After 5 bumpy dramatic hours Dee and I and our armed escort got to the train station. We paid the bloke 2 euro each for the pleasure and legged it to get tickets for the train at 8, it was 6 now.
Our good luck came in and we managed to get sleeper tickets for that evening and would be in Kolcatta in the morning. We stocked up on munchies, people watched (very good in this country) and the caught the train and spent a comfortable night listing to fat men snoring.
That’s some mission for one days travel : )
