Varanasi

We pulled into the station in Varanasi about 10 in the morning. We came in over a bridge and had a view down the Ganges of all the temples/Ghats that line the banks of the town, it was just like the TV I saw of it, very pretty and mystical. Once we got in and got in a taxi we saw the not so mystical side although it is still great.
We are staying on the banks of the river in the middle of the old town. It’s like a maze of alleys that you can get completely lost in. On the way down through we saw that are hundreds of cows wandering around, full sized water buffalo jobs as well. The streets are jammed with cows, people, monkeys, gurus, beggars, snake charmers etc. On the way to the hotel we walked passed a Cobra in a bag that a charmer had, he swung for me as I walked passed, I hopped up the wall. Everyone thought it was very funny.
We are staying in a really nice hotel that has great views up the Ghats, we were lucky to get it. Ghats are temples that Hindus use to wash them selves in the Ganges River and also another type for burning their dead as most Hindus are cremated, preferably here, and the ashes scattered into the river.
Our taxi driver took us on a tour of the town and it was frenetic as usual, more animals than normal but the air is clean mostly. We went to some temples, one full of monkeys, and everywhere.
We caught a paddle boat down the river and went back to the hotel, making arrangements to go on a dawn cruse the next morning at 5.30, supposed to be great.
We had vegetarian dinner, which is real good over here and crashed out early to the noise of all the religious ceremonies around us
